Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife Conservation Park

Sightseeing attraction | Sheffield | England | United Kingdom

Family-friendly wildlife park

The Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife Conservation Park in Sheffield, England, is a fascinating attraction that uniquely combines nature, wildlife, and education. Located near the city of Sheffield, this wildlife park offers visitors the opportunity to experience a variety of exotic animals in a lovingly designed environment. The focus is on the conservation and care of wildlife, especially butterflies, as well as the imparting of knowledge about their importance to the environment. It is a place that appeals to both families and nature lovers, combining elements of a zoo with interactive experiences and close encounters with nature.

Butterfly house with exotic animals

The centerpiece of the park is the tropical butterfly house, a covered facility that replicates a rainforest atmosphere. Here, numerous butterflies flutter freely, their colorful wings filling the air and inspiring awe in visitors. In addition to butterflies, this area is home to tropical birds such as parrots and lorises, which also fly freely or perch on branches, as well as reptiles like iguanas and turtles moving among the plants. The environment is densely planted with exotic vegetation, enhancing the tropical flair while allowing the animals to lead a natural lifestyle. A highlight is the section featuring nocturnal animals, where visitors can discover scorpions that glow in the dark, as well as various insects like beetles and stick insects.

Conservation projects in wildlife park

Outside the butterfly house, a spacious outdoor area extends, housing an impressive variety of animals. Particularly popular is the meerkat family living in a specially built enclosure that allows them to climb, dig, and observe their surroundings from vantage points. Through a glass pane, visitors can even see the meerkats in their underground burrow. Also in the outdoor area is "Lemur Heights," a generous outdoor enclosure where ring-tailed and red-ruffed lemurs play freely on trees and ropes, along with rare amphibians and birds sharing the habitat. Other park residents include African porcupines, birds like owls and falcons, as well as a variety of smaller animals such as wallabies and prairie dogs.

Interactive experiences for children

The park places great emphasis on the welfare of the animals and their appropriate care. The enclosures are designed to allow the animals to behave as naturally as possible, and there are enrichment programs in place to stimulate them mentally and physically. The keepers are well-trained and work closely with veterinarians to ensure optimal care. Additionally, the park is actively involved in conservation efforts, both locally and internationally. A portion of the proceeds goes towards projects to conserve British wildlife, such as purchasing wildflower seeds or maintaining natural habitats in the area.

Outdoor adventure activities

In addition to the animal attractions, the Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife Conservation Park offers numerous activities for children and families. In the outdoor area, there are adventure playgrounds, including a water zone with splash pads and sand areas that are particularly popular on warm days. Themed trails like the "Dino Trail" lead through an area with life-sized dinosaurs and provide a fun way to learn more about natural history. Seasonal events are regularly held, such as pirate and mermaid weeks in the summer or spooky Halloween events with costumes, shows, and interactive games for added fun. For rainy days, there is a covered activity area with crafts and games.

The facility is designed to be manageable and family-friendly, with plenty of seating and dining options. Visitors can either bring a picnic or enjoy freshly prepared meals in one of the on-site cafes, including light meals and homemade cakes. A gift shop offers souvenirs and themed mementos. The park is mostly wheelchair accessible, with wheelchairs available, and features facilities such as accessible toilets; however, some narrower paths or uneven areas may pose a challenge for individuals with limited mobility.

Visited as a last minute alternative as was meant to be going somewhere else. Price slightly too high but was a nice little day out. Went as 2 adults no kids. Talks about animals were really good, quite alot to see and fun things to do. Plenty of parking and loads fir kids to do including free rides, play areas and indoor arcade where alot was free with entry. Out of season so food outlets in the park were closed but cafe at entrance open. Serves some gluten free but we took in a picnic and used small picnic area

Absolutely fantastic little zoo which was perfect for my 6 year old who found bigger zoos a bit overwhelming and too much. Staff were all friendly and helpful and the animals are well looked after and very happy. Even though it wasn't raining properly and just spitting throughout the day, we still got given rainy day passes to go again for free within the next 3 months. Can't rate this place enough and my daughter absolutely loved it

It's not just a great butterfly house. Many other attractions such as tropical birds, ring tailed limas, meerkats and otters. The cafe at the park has a great selection of food and is excellent value.

Visted for my birthday on a grey February Sunday, however thoroughly enjoyed the butterfly enclosure, plenty to see especially if you are patient and observant. The bird house was also very interesting with a large variety of tropical birds freely wandering and flying around and quite unfazed by all the visitors. As a surprise birthday treat my husband had booked a meet and feed experience with the armadillos. I really enjoyed this and a big thank you to Abigail for the interesting talk and making my day extra special. Will definitely come back when it's warmer and will be telling my pupils all about the butterflies, the conservation work and all the animals and encourage them to visit. Plenty of staff around to answer questions and supervise various areas. Would definitely recommend a visit, a great day out for all ages.

To say butterfly house just doesn’t quite sum this up. I’ve been three times now and it never gets old. My children love it here too and it’s amazing for photos. Definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been 🦋💚📸
